Mercury Cyclone the natural powerhouse muscle car that can create immense energy of speeds over 120mph. The Mercury Cyclone is a muscle car that proved it had what it took to blow the competition away. Mercury started building muscle cars in 1962 when they developed the 406cid Marauder V8 block and put it in the Monterey S-55 hardtop. This marked Mercury’s first chapter in the many chapters of the notorious muscle cars.
In 1970 you could get Mercury’s latest development, the Cyclone GT and Cyclone Spoiler. The Cyclone Spoiler decked out with huge front and rear spoilers, essential ton keep the muscle car on the road and going in the direction it was pointed. The painted finish of tangerine allowed it to make an entrance on the road screaming “watch out I’m coming through!” This limited tire smoking muscle car came fully loaded with air conditioning, power steering and the famous 429ci “Cobra Jet” Ram Air V8 big block, with an extreme 500 horsepower, enough horses for all to take notice of its presence. All 500 horses are driven through an auto box and channeled through a Traction-Lok differential, designed to make sure all 500 horses arrived at their intended destination – asphalt!
Mercury’s track/speedway success was always put back into the development of its street cars. First impressions of the Cyclone Spoiler are of a full-blown race car let loose to eat up the highway. Summary of the Mercury Cyclone Spoiler was; you had better have a drag chute attached. The Cyclone was a full blown member of the well respected muscle car club right along side the Mustang, Corvette and Cobras. Sadly the early seventies saw the disappearance of the muscle car with decreases in engine capacities and horsepower. Together with new laws restricting emission levels and astronomical increases in gas prices added pressure on manufacturers to produce economical cars and the flood of imports killed the muscle car market.
But if you love classics and crave horsepower that can be counted in hundreds, the Mercury Cyclone is a prime example of a survivor of an era when the motto was “no replacement for displacement” where power was a primary factor. Muscle cars were the kings of the highway who will regain their thrones from modern “performance cars.
